Writing on Both Sides of the Brain

Writing on Both Sides of the Brain was published by the venerable HarperCollins, the publisher of such honored American authors as Mark Twain. Nowadays, RandomHouse (another well-loved house) does the distribution.

When I first signed the contract with HarperCollins (then called Harper & Row), I was so happy that I bounced down the block. I was sure even people at the supermarket must see the shining on my face. My friend Nancy Ernst and I wrote a poem about it. Harper & Row, Harper & Row! Does my face glow? Does it show, does it show?

Tom Grady was my first editor. I learned much from him that influenced my own later editing for other people. He respected the fact that I was the author, and always put the ball back in my court. "Perhaps a transition is needed here." "This needs another illustration. Could you supply one?"
